Wycombe v Fulham Review: On We Go

Hello! It's the first midweek Review of the season, and also the first Review of a Win for the season. I'm happy that we've won, if I wasn't then I should be supporting us- but now we've played a team like we have tonight I'm expecting us to take the Carling Cup seriously this season unlike last season where we were full strength against Doncaster and proceeded to rotate everyone out against Derby. I suppose the gamble of playing a team like we did can only really be gauged as to whether it worked or not by about 5pm on Saturday when we'll know the Brighton result. I made my point clear in the Preview yesterday that I wanted the League to be our only priority, and I still stand by that- but we've won so for now I'm happy.

The Kacaniklic goal was really well worked on our part to the point Kacaniklic couldn't really miss. The goal was exactly why Matt Smith was brought on in the first place, Smith coming on changed the game and his part in the build to the goal can't be left out and via Tom Cairney it fell to Pringle and it just was a quality pass into Kacaniklic who would have been talked about more were he to miss given the position he found himself in.

I suppose one of the big talking points from a team selection standpoint was Bettinelli starting. I'm still not committing one way or the other with regard to whether I think Bettinelli will stay, but I will say he didn't look like his head was elsewhere tonight and generally looked solid apart from one moment in the first half where he dropped a cross which thankfully came to nothing. I'm not necessarily disappointed to see Lonergan go out of the team for the game tonight because he has come in to be a #2- but I did want to see him again tonight. Especially for a Cup Game I didn't necessarily think he deserved to get dropped- but I'm happy to see Bettinelli back in the team and hopefully he stays there for Saturday.

I don't know if I jinxed it when I said Grimmer should be saved for Saturday in my Preview, but it's such a shame- and it's never nice to see a player stretchered off. That's probably the main talking point from the game today of which there were very few and I suppose all we can do is hope for the best when it comes to how long Grimmer's out for. The rest of the Defence was fine, some people may have differing opinions but I don't think we were ever properly stretched as a Defensive unit today as such it's not necessarily fair to say one way or the other on any of the Defenders. I will say I was pretty happy with Voser today, but I wouldn't call the game today a massive test for him. Hutchinson and Bodurov were generally fine, We actually look like we've got a Spine this season when it comes to defending as a unit and that can only help.

I thought Jamie O'Hara was different class tonight. He did fade a bit towards the end, but I wouldn't say that's a big talking point at this stage of the season. O'Hara on a Free could seriously turn into our best bit of business in quite a long time. Speaking of Free Transfer signings, Ben Pringle looked quality tonight as well. Pringle and Kacaniklic on the Wings actually looked really dangerous, and it may just be wishful thinking on my part with regard to wanting to see Tom Cairney play Centrally but I definitely wouldn't be against them being our starting wingers. Speaking of Cairney  I think he's still finding his feet in a Fulham shirt- and I doubt his positional uncertainty is helping matters where that's concerned. That said he definitely grew into the game and it was capped off with just a perfect pass through to Pringle in the build to the Kacaniklic goal. The Kacaniklic debate I think will rage on for a while this season, he's a player who can definitely do a job for us- but it's a just a case of fitting everyone in. I still say our team is perfect for a 4-3-3 at the minute, but clearly Kit doesn't see it that way and we move on.

Ross McCormack is a strange one sometimes. I think he just needs that one goal to really spark at the start of a season regardless of where it comes from. We of course had the Brentford goal last season and he's yet to really get going. That said he was still without a doubt one of our more threatening players and we can't not have him in the team. I did see a thing today about us offering a new deal to McCormack to fend off Boro and Norwich- but I really doubt there's anything to it and it's just paper talk. Cauley Woodrow was pretty ineffective today. I'm not against us playing him because he has shown glimpses of being a good player for us- but in the immediate term I was really disappointed he got the nod over Dembele and him pretty much doing nothing hasn't exactly helped his cause.

The Subs we made were all decent for different reasons. As already said Smith coming on combined with the Jack Grimmer injury/tackle is pretty much what changed the game. A player like Smith coming on will never not cause problems for the Defence, and in that respect he'll always have a role to play. I'm still not convinced whether he's a 90 Minute Player- but at least for now we don't really have a better option and he's getting the job done so it's not worth getting into at least for now. Jazz Richards coming on was a necessity and he looked solid when he did but as already said this wasn't a game where our Defenders were fully tested. The mysterious European Mattila had a cameo, in the very limited time he had I was pretty happy with what I saw. He wasn't a stand out by any means but he looked solid and definitely not afraid to get stuck-in so all in all he looked fine.

Overall it was a win, and a pretty solid one. It was by no means a great game- in fact it was pretty bad throughout. That said we got the job done and we've gotten a win under our belts so I'm happy. Apart from one chance Wycombe had in the First Half I never felt we were even in danger of conceding, but truthfully a Wycombe fan can say the same- it just happened that we took our big chance and Wycombe didn't which I suppose highlights the gap in quality between the two teams.

I saw another link with a guy who plays for Inverness but I haven't seen him play so I can't really comment on that one in terms of whether I'd want to see it happen or not.

RAW Review: 10th August

Hello! If you've managed to find yourself onto here then my worries about not being the one to do the plugging for the first few hours have been were for nothing, so great. We had last week where I wasn't really expecting much given the time between the two PPVs, and if I'm honest I wasn't really expecting much from this week either because we still had some people in key stories missing- and there was no Brock this week. Anyway, with reasonably low expectations let's just see if they were met.

Rollins, Cesaro, Owens & Orton Opening Segment
I actually liked this weirdly. On another night I almost definitely would have hated it, the thing with Rollins' mouth on Cena's picture was the sort of thing I usually hate- but I got a few laughs out of it and made my peace with it. The rest of the segment was great, it's good to see Cesaro getting mic time and the crowd actually reacting heavily to it and Owens is just great. So all in all I liked this, even though I wouldn't usually- I guess it's just one of those days.

Team Bella v Team BAD
Firstly, I do feel like I was one of the main contributors to the downfall of the Submission Sorority name- but now Paige, Becky and Charlotte are named after a Digger. This match was quite forgettable, the only thing I remember was the "We Want Sasha" chants- oh yeah and the worst roll-up I've seen in god knows how long. I did see some people last night bitching about Brie using Daniel Bryan moves and all, but I made my peace with that weeks ago. This may in fact shock some of you, Brie Bella isn't a good worker. Provided your mind hasn't just blown up we can carry on, Brie doesn't know how to work- she just does moves (mostly really sloppy) and hopes for the best.

The stuff after was necessary, but I still didn't like it for the similar reason that I didn't like the mass-brawl when they first debuted in that it became a complete clusterfuck only this time we didn't get the cool submissions pay-off. Summerslam is really strange in that it should be like Mania in there being multiple blow-off matches, it might just be the way I think- but I can see there being shenanigans in nearly every match. It might just be wishful thinking, but I'm hoping we see a turn from Charlotte in the Elimination match so we can finally get a storyline going- rather than just matches.

New Day v Los Matadores
This might shock some of you, if you didn't have your minds blown earlier you just might now. New Day does in fact rock. I don't remember anything about the match other than Kofi being great, Xavier's spot with the Torito Hurricanrana just amazing and then we had the dance stuff after which kept New Day's spot as the most GIFable part of RAW every week.

I'm not going to go overboard with my praise of New Day, I just love these guys- they're the one act that's consistently fun and at the end of the day that's what Wrestling should be.

Speaking of New Day being fun, they gave Renee Young the clap. In fact you can pinpoint the exact moment Renee Young get's the clap in this GIF.

This little segment was so great, you can tell New Day are so close to "snapping" and just telling everyone to fuck off now- especially Xavier. I honestly won't even be opposed to them not winning the Belts at Summerslam provided it does lead to them snapping. 

Randy Orton v Cesaro v Kevin Owens- #1 Contender Match

Wow this match was great. The only issue I had with this match was the finish- not even the finish as such, just who won. As soon as Orton was thrown into the barricade you knew exactly what was going to happen and how it was going to happen. But apart from that I really did like this match, but I don't know why that would shock anyone to be honest- in terms of ability in-ring these three are at least Top 5 in the company. 

Ambrose & Reigns Backstage Promo

I said it last night and I'll say it again, I'm not sure what this promo accomplished from a storyline progression standpoint- but I liked it a lot. 

Undertaker/Brock Lesnar Video Package

This was great. It's this sort of stuff that I wish they'd do so much more of. This video package managed to hype up the Summerslam match, keep both guys relevant, cement it as a proper Main Event AND accomplish all of this without either guy appearing. You had pretty much everyone relevant in the WWE world at the minute talking about the match as a must see, that in turn creates buzz around the match and tells the audience "Hey, this is going to be something special". It sometimes really is that simple to get an angle over. 

Luke Harper v Dean Ambrose

This was a really fun match, and once again I liked it. Firstly, the "Sit Down Byron" chants- absolutely great. The crowd was great the whole night actually, they were loud- but they didn't try and get themselves over at any point during the night and they "did their jobs" and enhanced the show. The actual match was really fun, I've got a slight issue with it- given what happened in a later segment but I'll talk about that then. 

If you've been reading these at least back to Battleground I've been predicting Ambrose turning on Roman. After the way these last few weeks have gone since Battleground and with the obvious possibility of the turn now it's "only" a Tag Match- and especially after what happened last night if Ambrose doesn't turn on Roman at Summerslam then I just simply don't know wrestling anymore. The only thing I can think of that would mean they don't is that they're making it so obvious Ambrose will turn to swerve us and for Roman and Dean to win clean. Hey that rhymes. 

MizTV w/ Daniel Bryan

Bryan and Miz have this really weird chemistry together that just clicks, even though by all logic it shouldn't. The segment was really fun just with Bryan and Miz even though there wasn't really a point to 95% of what they did apart from plugging various outside of the ring endeavours. Then Big Show came out and even he was fine tonight with the way he acknowledged the "Please Retire" chants and used them. Then we got Ryback's return and overall this was just a really fun segment that got everything where it needed to be heading into the go-home RAW. 

Mark Henry v Rusev

Okay. We had the Harper/Ambrose match where Ambrose was hitting Bray, Harper was superkicking Reigns and Reigns & Bray were going after each other- none of that was a DQ despite the fact we actually had people involved in the match getting involved with people who weren't. That's all fair enough as a standalone because the people who weren't never directly got their hands on the people who were. Then we move onto this "match". Lana attacked Summer because Summer was on the apron, then Lana roles Summer into the ring and starts laying into her- and apparently this means that Rusev should be DQ'd. It's these sort of moments that just make me want to scream, because pretty everything else on the show made sense- and then we get this. 

That said the Bulgarian Flag with Rusev on it was pretty cool, and Summer's Accolade looked surprisingly good- given the amount of time she took to set it up I was sure she was going to fuck it up, but she got the set-up right eventually and really cranked it. 

Neville v King Barrett/ Stephen Amell & Stardust stuff

This match was a complete squash, I looked away for maybe 20 seconds at the most just to check how my Post I put up yesterday was doing- I looked back and Neville was doing the Red Arrow. In short Barrett was completely killed. 

I'm fine with Celebrities coming in to generate buzz, and under the right circumstances I'm fine with Celebrities coming in and wrestling a match. Those "right circumstances" are pretty much; Will it generate buzz? and Is the guy at least mildly athletic? From what I saw last night both of those things are accurate when it comes to Amell coming in. The guy looked like great last night, from what I've seen and from what's been said he does the majority of his own stunts and trains like a lunatic. The way he vaulted the barricade and top rope showed he had more athletic ability than some of the people being paid to wrestle week-in week-out. 

Stephen Amell & Neville Backstage

Oh Yeah, Amell can cut a pretty good promo as well. I didn't really like Triple H effectively burying him and his legitimacy as a threat to a Wrestler- especially after he'd just gotten the better of Stardust with a take-down/spear but that's just Triple H and it built Amell up as an underdog of sorts so it's not a big issue. 

The only problem I had with this whole dynamic now is, what on earth is Barrett doing in there? Neville just killed him in at the very top end a minute- and now he's wrestling at a PPV. If Barrett get's significant offence on Neville (which is likely given Amell will be the Hot-Tag) I might just scream. Also, Barrett isn't even in there to take the Pin unless I've misread it- because I can't imagine Amell will be in for more than one match, as such I think there's a 99.9% chance he pins Stardust. 

Sheamus Backstage Promo

This wasn't that noteworthy, the only thing I got out of this was that Sheamus has a laugh PERFECT for a psycho heel character. Oh Yeah, he also pretty much spoiled the Main Event before it happened- but we all knew it was going to happen anyway so it's a non-issue to me. 

Randy Orton v Seth Rollins- WWE Title

I'm dropping the World Heavyweight part even if WWE isn't. It's just an unnecessary mouthful and I'm just getting bored with it at this point. The match up to the Sheamus interference was quite "meh". These two as opponents just peaked at the Mania RKO and it's all been down since then- so it may be unfair to say it, but I am. 

Then we got one of the most unintentionally hilarious seeming fuck ups in recent memory. I was wondering what was going on, and for a second I did in fact think Sheamus was going to cash-in. That moment was when Sheamus put Orton over the other side of the barricade which by WWE logic is approximately 10 miles from the ring. It's even more funny now I'm thinking back to it. What on earth were they thinking doing that barricade spot if Sheamus wasn't going to cash-in. We just had Sheamus yelling "I'M CASHING IN" at the Ref over and over for at least 20 seconds before Orton came back in. I can only assume Orton was meant to come in sooner, unless it was meant to be a rib on someone which I doubt. Either way it was hilarious, and completely nullified what happened before it because I was laughing too much to care about anything else that had happened during the segment. 

Heading into the Review I was a bit "meh" on this RAW, but now I've actually thought back to what happened and gone through it all for the Review I actually really liked this episode. Considering the people missing and the way they had to compensate I left the show feeling content. In fact I think that may be the reason I was light on the Rollins Opener because he's pretty much having to carry this feud by himself with very limited material. My expectations will be a lot higher with the go-home next week, but do think they'll be met now the Summerslam picture is a lot clearer on nearly every front and the "big guns" should be coming back into play.

Wycombe v Fulham Preview: Priorities

Hello! We're officially into the new season now, and for the first time in absolutely forever we're in the First Round of the Carling Cup. I want Fulham to win every game, I never won't- but with that said I really couldn't care less about the Carling Cup this season. We're not going to Win- that's just a fact, and with the team we've got at the minute I don't really want the extra games on our plate. As I'll discuss I won't want us to give up on the game before it's even begun and play the Kids, but at the same time playing people like McCormack, O'Hara, Christensen etc. is simply a waste when we have good alternatives. The team I'll talk about playing I think would have a decent shout at winning the game, but crucially with one exception there won't be any players who I would say are guaranteed first-team players for the season.

I don't know how much validity there is to the once again new Lewis Dunk rumours. If you missed it we were once again linked with him, this time for 5 Million by I believe The Mirror. It's just getting stupid now, the one thing that has to be said for the link was that it was supposedly our last bid for him- so at least there's that. As I discussed in my Review/Preview the simple fact is the longer we leave signing a Centre-Back the more it'll cost us and the absolute worst case scenario if we effectively price ourselves out of signing a Centre-Back who is capable of performing at the level we require and then we might as well call the season a write off already. So in short, Sign Lewis Dunk- Don't sign Lewis Dunk; either way just get it done ASAP. There's also another link that's come out today in that apparently we're after Jonny Williams on loan. This is a strange one, the link by no means we're definitely in for him- but it's still strange we're being linked with yet another Midfielder. It's not that I point blank don't want him, and I'm sure he could do a job for us- but at this point we'd just be stockpiling Midfielders and I'd rather stick with what we've already got and develop a team around our own players.

One thing I did want to talk about briefly was some of the people going on about the stats coming off the back of the game on Saturday. Yes, we did only have 1 shot "on target"- but without knowing for definite in terms of goalscoring opportunities I'd say we probably edged it. Also, Cardiff were the home team- so it's generally expected that they'll have more shots in general, the majority of which were wastes by the way. In short Stats can be deceiving. I just saw some people going on about the 1 shot on target stat, and I wouldn't say it annoyed me- but I did think it was putting my hat into the debate.

Speaking of the game on Saturday, in terms of the team we played against Cardiff there hopefully won't be many survivors. However, one player who I think and hope will retain their place is Andy Lonergan. You can make the argument about Bettinelli, but the way I see it- he presumably wasn't fit for Cardiff so he may well not be fit for the game tomorrow. Then if Bettinelli is fit then he should be coming back into the First Team for League games and in turn Lonergan would occupy the role for the Cup anyway. Either way I'd have Lonergan playing and Rodak on the bench and leave Bettinelli at home, and the Keeper issue can be thought about again once we come to directly thinking about the Brighton game.

I'm taking a similar line when it comes to the Full-Backs, specifically Right-Back. The good thing, if you can call it that about Jack Grimmer's absence is there was a definitive time frame put on it of having Three Days out from Friday. That in turn means he'd presumably be available tomorrow- but I'd hold off on using him until Brighton either way because as I discuss in the Cardiff Preview I rate Grimmer & Richards as Full-Backs with Richards at Left-Back rather than Richards & Voser. Speaking of Voser, he'd be my Right-Back pick for the game- as already said he was by no means perfect but by Voser standards I thought he was fine- and hopefully now Grimmer is back at least until Garbutt's fit we've got an established pecking order with Full-Backs. I'd have Kavanagh take the Left-Back spot, at this stage and on the assumption that Grimmer's fit I'd say Voser & Kavanagh is a fair pairing on the rotation front. It's a similar situation to it with the Centre-Backs, with Donnelly's Loan out there isn't even competition when it comes to rotation and in turn it means that Bodurov and Burgess will come in.

Assuming we're going to be playing the same system we played against Cardiff and in general during Pre-Season I think a "rotation" Midfield is still going to be of a sufficient quality to have a good game. I spoke about it in the build to Cardiff, but Kacaniklic is truly the odd-man out in that he is more than capable of starting in I'd say nearly every team in the Division- but he just doesn't have a place at the moment. That said I'd be starting him down the Left tomorrow, and then we can once again go from there for Saturday- I have to admit it is nice to have good depth in some areas. The Right-Mid spot is a bit more interesting, I'm not sure if he will- but I'd like to see Larnell Cole be given a go in a proper competitive game and tomorrow is as good a chance as any. Sakari Mattila is a strange signing, but a very Fulham one. Without knowing for definite it sounded from what Kit said as though he hadn't even seen him play before we made the signing. As with Cole now's as a chance as any in order to see what he's made of, and from what I can gather he's a "proper" holding mid so he'll be sitting deep. The player who I'd expect to be pulling the strings tomorrow and (hopefully) running the show is Hyndman. Players at this stage of their career (should) just want to play Football and especially players like Hyndman we should be desperate to keep, so giving them game time can only help our case when it comes to whether he renews his contract.

The only other survivor from our team against Cardiff, at least as far as my team selection goes is Tom Cairney. It might just be wishful thinking on my part, but I'm hoping with a hopeful near full rotation of course meaning McCormack and Smith are taken out of the equation Cairney can move central and play as a proper #10. I haven't completely forgotten about Thomas Eisfeld, I just simply don't see a place for him anywhere in the team. Who'll be playing in front of him is another question, I can see Woodrow, Dembele and depending on his fitness Taggart all possible playing. However from what I've seen from the players both in Pre-Season and against Cardiff I'd go for Dembele. He at least seems to have matured quite a bit and when he came on against Cardiff I definitely liked the look of him and the way the team played once he came on- and I've got no doubt he'll cause the Wycombe defenders countless problems.

Team for Wycombe:

Yes, that team isn't our strongest- but I wouldn't exactly call it a "weak" team- and it's one I think is capable of winning tomorrow. That said if we were to go out, and Wycombe are definitely a Banana skin we won't have played the majority of our "best" team and we can move onto Brighton and the league in general which at this early stage of the season should be our only priority. When we get around to the FA Cup that situation may well have changed, if we find ourselves where we were last season in the league when FA Cup season came around then our priorities may well switch- and either way we've got a better chance of making Wembley in the FA Cup anyway. In short, I won't be crying if we do go out tomorrow but hopefully we don't.

Cardiff v Fulham Review: Fulham Are Back

It just wouldn't be Fulham if it was simple. Today's game was just really strange in a lot of ways- but we've come out of the game with a point, and heading into the game with team we were I definitely would have taken that heading into it. Am I happy with the point coming off the back of game? No, but I suppose the best way to describe my feelings toward the game is content. I think it's reasonably safe to say that Cardiff are a tricky away fixture, so to go away to them on the first day of the season with an incomplete team pretty much and get a point is a pretty good result all things considered.

The goals today were weird in different ways. I'm not entirely sure what happened with the Smith goal to be honest, I suppose the only things to really say on the Smith goal front is credit to Smith for following up on the Pringle "thing" and if I were Cardiff I'd be looking to sign a Keeper ASAP (assuming Marshall goes). Firstly, nobody was stopping the Noone goal- sometimes you just have to acknowledge a proper top draw goal as it is and move on. That said I suppose you could say Pringle was involved in both goals in a weird way. It was unfortunate that his slip let Noone cut-in in the first place, but these sort of things do happen sometimes and we just have to deal with them.

I thought Andy Lonergan was quality today (distribution aside). As already said nobody was stopping the Craig Noone goal- and he dealt with everything else really well and made some top quality saves along the way. I'm not reading anything into Bettinelli being on the Bench today, as I said in the Preview I'm taking his injury at face value- and as such I don't think there was any chance he was fully fit heading into the game today. That said the Lonergan performance was really encouraging on the Bettinelli front in multiple ways. Either Lonergan's proven he's capable of being the #1 or Bettinelli knows he's got to really fight to keep/regain his place in the first team and in turn meaning he'll up his game. Win/Win.

Much was said about the Defence heading into the game by me and pretty much every other Fulham fan- however it was far from as bad as I was fearing it would be. Credit where credit is due, Shaun Hutchinson had a quality game today, apart from one moment in the first half where he nearly gave away a goal he was by far our best defender today. Dan Burn is a necessary evil at the moment, he was a mistake waiting to happen today but his height and general physical stature is needed somewhere in the back-line. The Burn/Hutchinson pairing still scares the life out of me, even though they coped reasonably well today between them- but I still won't be at all happy until we sign a Centre-Back whether that's Lewis Dunk or someone else. Kay Voser is by no means a good player, he was clearly scouted as such given the number of times Cardiff came down our Left-Hand side- but grading on the Kay Voser curve I thought he did pretty well today. Jazz Richards was fine, I did find it funny that we've got him as an option for MOTM on the Website- he wasn't Top 3 performances today (at least for me) but he was fine.

I said in my Transfers post a few weeks back that Jamie O'Hara won't be everyone's favourite player. After seeing O'Hara today and against Palace combined with that interview he did I think Yesterday he's definitely on his way to being mine. Without a doubt he controlled the Midfield today and for me was the best player on the pitch- he may well turn into our best bit of business this Summer and by quite a long way at the rate we're going. Cairney's wasted on the Right, I said it before, I was thinking it during and now I'm saying it after. He at least grew into the game- or at least he did from where I'm concerned, but he was pretty ineffective all things considered and it annoys me to no end that we're playing our (at this stage) "marquee" signing out of position for a second season in a row. Pringle was strange in that he didn't really have a notable game one way or the other- yet his name is attached to both of the goals in some way. I thought Christensen was fine, there's no doubting he's got ability and he definitely had moments today where he showed it. He hasn't gotten to the level he was at before Christmas at any stage in 2015, but it's the first game of the season so I wasn't expecting miracles out of people yet.

I think McCormack will have nightmares about that chance in the last few minutes. It was without a doubt McCormack's fault, I won't hear anyone blame Dembele- he simply didn't need a second touch. McCormack's a really strange one, I don't know if it's him dropping deep- or him being instructed to drop deep either way he shouldn't. If we're desperate for a #10 why not play our #10 as a #10? I'm desperate to see McCormack playing on the Last-Man and Cairney to move Central, but I just can't see it happening under Kit. All things considered I thought Matt Smith was good today, he played the role he was expected to and he played it well- the goal was a bit of a gift but on balance I'd say he deserved one today between hitting the post and a couple of the other chances.

I'm not sure about Dembele's long-term future in a Fulham shirt, the "Sky Sources" thing about Dembele made me laugh seeing as it had come out in France about a week before but at least for this post that's a moot point. For me we looked much better driving forward when Dembele came on- we were threatening in a different way with Smith on, but when Dembele came on we I don't know if you can we say we looked "better" but we definitely looked good with him on.

We're moving onto Wycombe now- and as I'll go into more detail with in the Preview on Monday it's a game that I simply don't care about. I obviously want us to win every game, but going out of the Carling Cup isn't the end of the world with the state we're in at the minute. But anyway that's for Monday and for the time being we can enjoy being at least content with the point. Simply put if you'd have told me heading into the game we'd get a point and should have won I'd have taken it.

Cardiff v Fulham Preview: Here We Go Again

Hello! It's that time of year again, guys. We've had three or so months to recuperate after the abomination that was last season- and now we're all back on the Fulham Rollercoaster, and we just have to pray there's more ups than downs. I was going to do somewhat of a Pre-Season Review and looking at the team I'd be playing throughout the season, I had it written and ready to go up last Sunday but then I realised that'd pretty much make this post a moot point so this post will be a weird hybrid of a Season Preview/Predictions and a Preview for tomorrow.

I suppose the "big" albeit not surprising news that's come out this week is the Mitroglou Loan, where by seeing a few tweets here and there yesterday I can see everyone's reacted to it rationally and logically. Yes, the Palace game was nice- and seeing Mitroglou appear was a nice tick off of my Bucket List but there was no chance he was going to play in the Championship, it was just a fact. If anything the Palace game highlighted that fact, he's simply too good to be at the level we as a Club currently find ourselves at. 

The other bits of news that have come out today are the Squad Numbers and the Sponsor Announcement. I don't think anyone was surprised when we revealed VisitFlorida as our sponsor- in fact it was possibly the worst kept secret in god knows how many years- I know some people do get hung up on the aesthetics of the kit, but to me it's a non-issue as long as the players in the kit are winning. The squad numbers are interesting to a point, the #5 and #7 spots being left open I think people are reading too much into. We're trying to get rid of Amorebieta- and he's the only obvious candidate to be the #5 at present and the same can be said for the #7- as I'll discuss later on hopefully there'll be new players in those shirts soon enough, but I do think people may be looking into it a bit too much on that front. Bettinelli's ended up with the #1 Shirt I suppose is the main other talking point out of the squad numbers, while Squad Numbers are never a guarantee that a player will leave it is interesting to a point that he's gotten the #1 shirt and hopefully that'll at least slow down the rumours of the Bettinelli exit where people really jumped the gun.

One thing I did find slightly hilarious coming out of the Palace game was the fact everyone immediately jumped to conclusions once Bettinelli wasn't in either team. This Summer is as much of a proof as any that someone missing a Pre-Season game doesn't automatically mean a transfer somewhere else see Dunk (more later), McDonald and more. I'm willing to take the Bettinelli injury at face value for now, but as discussed in my Transfers post a few weeks back it's by no means an impossibility that Bettinelli does go- as discussed/hinted at in Kit's Press Conference yesterday when he spoke about the Contracts of people like Bettinelli, Hyndman etc.

Moving onto the game tomorrow and without knowing for definite, I think it's reasonably safe to assume that Lonergan's going to start tomorrow. I'm willing to attribute Lonergan's horrendous distribution against Palace to nerves and move on, although that wasn't helped by the fact he was lumping it up to Woodrow most of the time. Aside from the distribution I thought Lonergan looked reasonably good as he has done for the majority of Pre-Season and let's face it, he's a better alternative to Bettinelli than Kiraly was. 

It's amazing what a few weeks of nothing going on and an injury will do for the confidence levels. At the time I wrote the Transfers thing we were a few weeks out from the start of the season and we'd just signed Luke Garbutt on Loan and I was pretty happy. We'd just signed Dunk for the 7th time this Summer and things were looking up from a defensive standpoint, now it's all gone horrible wrong. We still haven't signed a Centre-Back, Dunk or otherwise and we're headed to Cardiff with a worse Back Five than the one we had at the end of last season- and it isn't even close. The Centre-Backs are where the major problem lies (I know that may shock some of you), and there isn't really a "right" pairing with the Centre-Backs we currently have.

I don't rate Dan Burn at all, I'll preface what I'm about to say with that- but given the way Cardiff are likely to set-up we can't not have someone as physically imposing in the team like Burn. The Burn/Hutchinson partnership scared the life out of me against Palace as such I'd go for Bodurov next to him. I'm not going to get into the debate over which Centre-Back is superior to the other- can we all just agree they're all awful and move on? With Garbutt's injury we're left in an awkward position and while it's far from ideal I think we should shift Jazz Richards to Left-Back and bring in Grimmer at Right-Back, it's basically a choice of Grimmer or Voser/Kavanagh and I know who I rate more.

EDIT: Turns out Grimmer's ill so that's that plan out of the window and we'll have Voser/Kavanagh. Everyone contain your excitement. 

I saw a thing yesterday where I don't know if Brighton were doing a Q&A with their Chairman or whatever and of course Dunk came up and the Chairman basically said he'd sell Dunk for the right price. The fact we haven't even had a whiff of another Centre-Back being linked with us suggests to me that we've put all of our Eggs in one basket when it comes to Dunk and at this stage of the window I think we're just going to put up the money to sign him even if it's way, way too much. The fact is everyone knows we need a Centre-Back desperately, and the closer to the Deadline that we get the higher the price will be so we might as well just cough up- and hopefully before Brighton next weekend where Zamora's guaranteed to score as it is. 

The Midfield is strange, it's by far and a way our strongest area out of three- but we're still lacking in it to an extent. The recent news is the signing of Mattila, while it's not a signing that'll set the world alight we paid a really small fee for him and I'm not going to make a judgement on him until I've actually seen him play- which without knowing I'd guess would be against Wycombe and not tomorrow. Moving onto who will be on the pitch- I'm working under the assumption that we're going to play a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 even though I'd prefer for us to go with a 4-3-3. With that in mind and much to my chagrin the Midfield pretty much picks itself, and unfortunately that also means Tom Cairney will be on the Right. 

The Palace game pretty much confirmed what I'd already thought in that Cairney is just wasted out on the Right-Hand side, but the problem is we don't have a proper alternative. I'd thought about Kacaniklic because he's looked pretty good in Pre-Season as well, but he's wasted out on the right as well so I'm not really sure what we're going to do. From what we saw from O'Hara against Palace and Pre-Season in general he's probably one of the first names on the team sheet for tomorrow. I didn't see him every week at Wolves/Blackpool but he looked hugely motivated to me against Palace and I think he knows we're his last shot at a "good" club. Another way to put Kacaniklic in the team would be to have Pringle move centrally, but I can't see that as it would mean leaving Christensen out- as such the Midfield is pretty straightforward. 

The Strikers are weird at the moment. I think it's pretty safe to say that McCormack is the first name on the team sheet, but we're in this weird situation where we need an out and out Striker to be playing up-front with McCormack who'll be in a #10 sort of role. Burn, Hutchinson and Woodrow were the only people who looked completely out of place against Palace, and we simply can't rely on Woodrow to perform. I'd like to think and I would assume that we played Woodrow against Palace and had Smith at Colchester for the sole reason that we know what Smith offers to the team, and at least for me Woodrow is still somewhat of an unknown quantity. Smith is my choice without a doubt, that's not necessarily an endorsement of Smith though- and if we do bring a Striker in I can see Smith going elsewhere by September. 

Speaking of bringing a Striker in, along with Mitroglou going out- we've been linked with Dwight Gayle coming in. It now looks like Gayle's likely destination is Boro after we had all but signed him a few days ago (sound familar). I think it goes without saying that Gayle would be a quality signing were we to get him, but that just doesn't seem likely now and we should move on quickly because there are other options out there- just off the top of my head I'd assume Gary Hooper's available. I think the Gayle stuff is all dependant on whether Boro can get Rhodes, so let's just cut the middle-man out and get Rhodes eh?

We're definitely in a better overall state than we were this time last year, I don't think that's in doubt- however I still think we're in for a pretty dodgy season all in all. I think we're going to have a really rough August, leading to a few panic buys before the Window shuts and we'll eventually stabilise getting to high Mid-Table with the ambitions of Playoffs- but then around March/April time we'll completely go off the rails and settle at around 10th-14th. I don't know what I'd deem a successful season to be honest, I guess I'll know it when I see it. However starting the season with the defence we have is basically starting the race with one leg- and we can't have any serious ambition until that's fixed as an absolutely bare minimum.

Tomorrow's game is a weird one, I think with the current state we're in we're possibly the best value for money bet when it comes to Over/Under Goals. With the way we've gone about our business this window I think we'll definitely create scoring opportunities, and at least in the immediate future the only real way we can try and win a game is to outscore them- because with the defence we're going to line up with a Clean Sheet is a near impossibility.

Tough Enough: The Burial, Episode 2

Hello! Two Posts in two days- I don't know what's come over me. We had Episode 1 when I determined Tough Enough was the worst show on TV and needed to be buried, and somehow it's actually gotten infinitely worse since the last one. I'll preface this all by saying I don't give a fuck about Tough Enough, any of the guys involved and pretty much everyone on the show- BUT it's one of those weird shows that are so bad they're actually good.

Given how I started the first one I only think it's fair to re-breakdown the characters that are being portrayed on the show.

A lot's happened since the first burial, and none of it good. You can definitely make the argument that the best three people in the competition have gone out in consecutive weeks, but the thing is the only reason they're gone is because Vince allowed it to happen. The prime example is Amanda, I don't know if it's Vince, Dunn or someone else "upstairs" but they've clearly taken a liking to her for whatever reason. Last Week was a test when it comes to Amanda's public support and when it became obvious she was going out they had Miz save her- both for the reasons of keeping her in, but also to get people talking.

The massive issue with Tough Enough is simply the fact it doesn't know what it wants to be. I was expecting/wanting something in the style of the Network Special headed into the show where it'd be gritty and actually feel like the contestants are going through hell to get a Contract. Instead we've ended up with some weird mix between that, Total Divas and X Factor (sub in any show which has a judging panel and is voted on for by the public). Not only that, it's a bad version of all three- so when all three are combined it's a hilarious awful show, with no identity.

I'll give you the PERFECT example, the bullshit Tanner & Chelsea love angle. Tanner's wound up getting the Daniel Bryan character when The Bellas were betting on who could get his virginity first, yes that happened- and I'll never forget it. All of the segments with them were awkward as fuck (which I think was the point) and they had literally no chemistry with each other, in short- it's the Tough Enough version of Dolph and Lana. Now Chelsea's gone I'd bet money on Tanner being all depressed in the confessions booth thing they all narrate the episode in saying how he'll miss Chelsea etc. and then he'll be "off his game" in the training aspect and possibly end up in the Bottom Three next week where he might end up going out if they put ZZ and Sara Lee next to him.

I was convinced they wanted to get rid of Sara Lee last night they edited it to make her seem like a dangerous in-ring worker (which she may well be) by having Giorgia go off on one about how Sara Lee nearly paralysed her by giving her a Body Slam onto her Shoulder when she didn't even tuck her chin. I've never taken a "bump" in my life and even I know you have to do that. Sara Lee's a weird one, I said both on Twitter and in my first one of these that after the pay-off to the Paige/Sara Lee angle she'd miraculously be a much better contestant, shockingly she was. Then they edited it this week really weirdly and pretty much put Sara Lee in the Bottom Three for not saying sorry for giving a dodgy Body Slam where Giorgia took a bad bump. I think the Sara Lee stuff in the Bottom Three was solely to gauge if she still has public support to the level she had in the Paige/Sara Lee stuff, and she has so job done on that front.

It's hilarious to me, you know the trainers absolutely hate and I mean HATE ZZ, the Judges are getting pissed off with him pretty consistently now- so by that logic you'd think they'd want him out. I don't know if Vince and/or Dunn are idiots, but the fact they "book" ZZ to be a loveable southern guy who's getting shit on by everyone which in turn makes him the Underdog is just beyond stupid. Although the fact they gave ZZ a challenge yesterday which they pretty much knew he'd excel in either means he's going to be the "star student" next week, or they'll make it out like he's gone backwards between now and next Tuesday in an attempt to get him voted off- either way it won't work. I thought they'd get ZZ in the Bottom Three and do a double save one week to get him off, but now that's completely out the window so fuck knows how they're getting rid of him now.

I love Miz on this show. He just "gets" Reality TV, firstly if anyone actually believe Miz was the one made the decision to save Amanda I pity you, I truly do. That said Miz was the perfect one to do all the shit with Amanda because he knew exactly how to sell to get the maximum reaction from it. That combined with the fact it's clear Miz just doesn't give a fuck about anyone in the competition now just makes generally great TV. The judges in general don't give a fuck, Bryan's tweet yesterday about reading a book about the meaning of life made me laugh- he's actually losing the will to live on the show and it's just hilarious. I don't get the Paige hate off the back of this show, I just don't. Vince has finally reached the early 2000s for his pop culture references, you've got Sheamus doing the Gladiator shit and Vince has seen Simon Cowell and thought a British Heel Judge was the best thing going. Just compare her on this shit to the Austin Podcast the other night when she came over as a reasonably likeable, albeit nervous person- that's the difference between Tough Enough and Reality when it comes to Paige and it amazes me people are actually getting worked by the Paige stuff or really any of the stuff the judges do.

The only genuine thing from the judges are when Miz calls ZZ out because he sees ZZ "slacking" in the same opportunity that Miz had to take with both hands and cling onto for dear life.I also believe that Daniel Bryan does in fact want us to buy his book, that's pretty much it. Actually that's not fair, most of the stuff Bryan says I do believe- but that's just because he's over all of the Reality Show bullshit.

Then we get onto one of the huge issues I've got with the show. I can deal with all the bullshit challenges because they are slightly less bullshit than some of the earlier ones. The format is still a complete mess and they're changing it week-to-week as proof of that fact, but the one thing I can't get my head around is the fucking Hosting situation. Nobody could have called what'd happen with Hogan before it all came out, that said when it comes to Tough Enough aside from Mada having no hope of winning without him there there was no huge impact. That said when it all happened from a Tough Enough perspective I thought it'd be obvious what they should do. Shift Jericho over to the Judging Panel and have Renee Young host while keeping Miz on Tough Talk seeing as he was just great on it. I don't know why they've got Renee Young there, she literally has no purpose and it's just a waste of her as an on-screen talent. If there was one thing that's still annoying me about this awful show is that. Tough Enough was always awful, but I'd genuinely look forward to Tough Talk- now Saxton's hosting it doesn't even have that going for it. They actually have to wreck everything good about shows don't they?

I was tempted to make an Attack of the Clones reference but I thought I'd leave it- all of the girls other than Sara Lee are just so generic now Chelsea's gone. It seems as though they're actively trying to get rid of anyone who actually wants to be a Wrestler like Patrick, Chelsea seemingly Mada all in favour of the most generic people possible who I suppose they think they can "mould".

The whole show is completely flawed, it's not about who's Tough Enough both in terms of it being a popularity contest with the General Public AND with the office and all of that's just made a generally horrible show.

RAW Review: 3rd August

Hello! It's another RAW Review and I really need to think of more witty stuff to say in these intro paragraphs. This RAW was a strange one going in because this was pretty much bang on in the middle for the Summerslam build meaning a dud week was expected, combine that with the fact at least half of pretty much every major feud was missing headed into last night and as a result I wasn't expecting big things from last night, but sometimes those type of shows turn into a pleasant surprise.

Seth Rollins Promo
If they're going to have long and rambling opening promos at least let them be done like this. End of the day with Cena fucked for at least a few weeks they're treading water on this feud until he comes back so at least I can say I was entertained by this treading water promo. The Open Challenge announcement was good for what followed after, but it made literally zero sense. In fact Rollins specifically made a point in one of his Promos about only defending against "worthy" guys and Cena defending against "the rest". So he proceeded to not only defend against "the rest", but he specifically made a point of wanting to defend a guy especially beneath him- literally.

Seth Rollins v Neville- WWE Title
I completely loved this match. I'd say about 85% of matches in WWE have an obvious outcome, and that's a pretty conservative estimate. The job of all of those matches is to convince the crowd (and the viewers watching on TV) that the obvious outcome isn't in fact obvious and the no-hoper in this case Neville might actually win. From that perspective it was one of the best ever, having the false finishes go to 2.99/3 before the kick out was just- wow. Nobody can say they didn't think Neville had won after the Red Arrow spot, and if they do they're lying. I just loved it, it put over Neville massively which in turn is good for the Amell/Stardust stuff and it also put Rollins' character over yet again. This was just great, I loved it.

New Day & The Ascension v Los Matadores & The Lucha Dragons
This was just a really standard tag match. I'm still not entirely sure what the match for Summerslam will be other than it being for the Belt and including New Day. I thought it'd be a 4-Way but now The Ascension have gotten involved I'm not really sure- because even with time I can't see a scenario where a 5+ Team match doesn't end badly. Maybe it'll be a gauntlet match but I don't know. Oh Yeah, I don't know if any of you know this- Xavier Woods and the New Day are great- that may shock some of you.

Charlotte & Becky Lynch v The Bellas
I point blank refuse to call them the "Submission Sorority". It's like when they tried to put over Erick Rowan as a Wine Maker and a member of MENSA or whatever- but the porn version, literally. I'd bet on it lasting approximately a week before they change them to something else. The match itself was fine, it's good to see Nikki Bella's upping her in-ring game to at least compete with the NXT girls- and that's coming from someone who HATES The Bellas. I said it last night and I'll say it again here and somewhat expand. The crowd does not know what to do in these matches, the "casual" fan doesn't watch NXT out of the 1.2 or so million people who are subbed to the Network without knowing I'd guess about 400,000-600,000 at the most watch NXT. That's 400,000 out of the approximately 4 million who watch RAW. The casual fan will only have been vaguely aware of what was happening in NXT. They're not used to Womens matches going 10+ minutes, they're into it for 2 or 3 as they were here- and they only really came back into it for the Hot Tag. The "Diva Revolution" isn't an overnight thing, that said if they keep going the way they are- and that's by no means a guarantee with Vince it'll eventually get over.

MizTV with Cesaro & Owens
I liked this without loving it. I don't know if it annoyed me that they didn't shoot the "Cesaro Section" to make it look as impressive as it was, and if on the off chance the guy who organised it on Reddit is reading this I'd just like to say well done. This segment to me was a bit "meh", all three guys are capable of a lot better- but that said I don't think they should have gone overboard last night with so long left before Summerslam. I don't know if this feud will soon be for the IC Title- with Rybacks Knee being as it is I can't see a scenario where he's fine for Summerslam, and with Owens hitting Miz into Cesaro this feud is the obvious way to go for the Title heading into Summerslam, which I'm all for.

Ronda Rousey-Piper Tribute
Yes, the Piper tribute was nice on the part of Rousey- but that wasn't the reason they did it. They've been kissing up to Rousey pretty much since Mania seemingly to try and schmooze her so much she does Mania. ONE PROBLEM, Rousey will not and can not make the decision of if she does Mania- it's Dana White and Dana White alone who'll make that decision. People might make the argument of Dana won't be able to stop her- but the fact is he can. I would put money on there being a clause in Rousey's UFC deal that limits what she can do without permission from the UFC, especially when it comes to WWE or any other TV Show where she can potentially get hurt. So in short, if Rousey tries to force it through Dana either blocks it, sues Rousey and/or WWE and most likely puts a cease and desist to boot which'll prevent Rousey from appearing on WWE programming anyway. It's just stupid that they haven't worked that out yet seemingly.

Rusev v Mark Henry
The match was fine, but it wasn't Rusev doing weird comedy. Also, it was weird because Rusev carried on after the match and that was when I was expecting Dolph to make his big return and beat the shit out of Rusev while Lana slapped Summer with a Fish repeatedly but we just got nothing.

Bray Wyatt Promo
This was weird, just because Sheamus was in Wyatt' weird smokey lair. I don't know if that was meant to make me laugh but it did.

King Barrett v Zack Ryder
If there was a definition of a "crowd killer" match this was it. Fair enough if you want to seemingly try and get King Barrett over- but have him go out there and kill someone, especially someone like Zack Ryder. Instead we got a way too long match and it just killed the crowd even more so than it was already by this point.

Paul Heyman Promo
Paul Heyman was just on a completely different level to literally every single person on earth last night. He was just so, so good- even by Paul Heyman standards this was a next level promo. Nothing I say can do it any sort of justice, just go and watch it.

Paige v Naomi
I can pretty much Copy & Paste what I said about the other Divas match, with the only thing really to add is the crowd was even more dead and there was even less debate over the outcome because Paige wasn't going to lose when she was doing Austin's Podcast- that was just a fact.

Stardust Promo
This was fine, what with Neville's exertions earlier this feud is somewhat relevant now- and with Amell on next week I've got a reasonable amount of hope that this feud will turn into something decent now.

Orton, Ambrose & Reigns v Bray, Harper & Sheamus
This was about the House Showiest House Show match ever, and it was the Main Event. It was obvious who was taking the Pin, it was obvious who was going to take the offence before the Hot-Tag and it was obvious who was going to shine. That said I did like it quite a bit. Reigns looked great last night, it's as important as ever that Reigns looks good because I can't not see Ambrose turning on him at Summerslam which'll mean Reigns will be Pinned again at a PPV. All that needs to be done for Reigns to get over is for him to be a pissed off Samoan who beats the shit out of people, that's why I loved it whenever Sheamus and Reigns were in with each other- because they both like beating the shit out of their opponent. So basically this was a fun match, nothing more nothing less.

This whole show almost felt booked in reverse, the Neville/Rollins match was pretty much when the show and the crowd peaked and it never really recovered. That said this show largely met my expectations with all of the outside factors considered so I'm pretty happy all in all.
